Program Manager - K-12 Enrollment Specialist (Avela Education)

Role

We are looking for a K12 enrollment specialist (subject matter expert) who can work with our education clients to implement Avela.

This role is an exciting hybrid between:
-- Program Management (30%),
-- Strategy Consulting (15%),
-- Enrollment Analysis (15%), and
-- Business Development (30%).

We are looking for a partner who can share deep insights in the student enrollment and school choice space. Ideal candidates have background working in a State Department of Education, a large public school district, or a large Charter Management Organization (CMO) in a Director+ role.

And since you'll be working so closely with clients, you'll also collaborate with our Product Team to ensure your insights and experiences inform our product direction. Similarly, you'll work closely with Sales and Marketing to write proposals, join sales meetings, demo the product, create marketing collateral, draft thought leadership, and present at conferences.

You will be one of our first teammates and so will be involved in many areas of the business, including product management, operations, sales, marketing, customer service - you name it, you’ll help with it. This role is a good fit for a customer centric entrepreneur who loves ambiguity and wants to solve problems in education

Responsibilities

    • Project Management - You’ll lead our projects with customers and own the deliverables, timelines, communication, and execution of our commitments.
    • Customer Success - You’ll be the frontlines for our customers, supporting them with technical and programmatic issues.
    • Business Development - You’ll join sales calls as the SME and lend your credibility and expertise to the sales process. Similarly, you’ll support marketing with the creation of collateral and thought leadership pieces. You'll also develop proposals for services engagements.
    • Thought Leadership - As a subject matter expert, you’ll drive our thought leadership in the enrollment space, which includes writing blog entries, posting on social media, speaking at conferences, presenting webinars, and more.
    • Product Council Advisor - Our product and engineering team will need your expertise as they design and build our product suite.
    • Janitorial - As a growing startup, we need help across the board, from HR to finance to operations. Everyone pitches in to “take out the (proverbial) trash,” and nothing is “beyond your job description" or "below your paygrade."

Qualifications - Role

    • Expertise in district enrollment processes and tools with deep insights on best practices
    • 4+ years of experience working in schools, districts, CMOs, or other education organizations
    • 2+ years in the private sector, ideally technology companies or startups (preferred)
    • 2+ years of project/program management experience
    • Excellent communicator, including written and oral
    • Capable of producing compelling slide presentations and reports
    • Technical proficiency, excellent at troubleshooting, comfortable with new technology
    • Customer-centric mindset and passion for education, equity, or social impact
    • Entrepreneurial spirit and drive, extraordinary comfort with ambiguity, enjoyment wearing many hats
    • Among the best at what you do with a growth mindset and desire to constantly improve
    • Preferred: MBA, MA-Education, or MA-Economics preferred

Company

Avela is an education technology startup focused on equity in education admissions and enrollment. We give enrollment, admission, and award officers the tools to make equitable decisions about the allocation of educational opportunities.

We work with school districts and charter networks across the country, including Oakland Enrolls, Tulsa Public Schools, Jersey City Board of Education, and New Orleans Public Schools. We also work with a range of nonprofits and NGOs, including Teach for America and the Inter-American Development Bank.

Our platform has four parts to cover each stage of the admission journey, from exploring options to applying and final selection and admission. Our flagship product, Avela Match, is used for running coordinated matching markets to assign individuals to programs, such as public school placements in choice districts. We also offer a range of consulting services to help districts implement enrollment reforms and advance equity in educational programs.
